How To Stop Information Overload
I have read that the Monday version of the New York Times contains more information than a person would have had access to their entire life during the latter part of the 19th century. You can imagine how much more data we have access to today, especially when you factor in the internet. So it’s increasingly important to learn how to stop information overload.
The term does not really need much definition as it is rather self explanatory but I did another article on it that gives some background. It’s a worthy read. But we are no less confronted by it on an almost daily basis. We all like to grab as much information as we can but as with most things, we should concentrate on a less is more approach.
Less Is More
Think about the last time you went to a restaurant that had pages and pages of selections. Were you happy with the fact that you had all these choices? Most people feel overwhelmed with this amount of choices. Now contrast that with a restaurant that had only one page. How easily were you able to choose then? It’s like this in many aspects of our lives and information is no different.
Define What You Want To Accomplish
Let’s suppose you want to create content for your website. You start cranking out your research and gather those resources in bookmarks. Then when you go to write your article you discover that you have way too much information to go through. You were excited initially by capturing everything you believed you needed. But when actually using it, you felt like you couldn’t really decipher all that information. The problem is, you didn’t really define the purpose of your content. That is a crucial element when creating content. When you define what you want to accomplish, you will focus much more on just gaining the research needed for that purpose. You’ll have way less content but it will be narrowly targeted to the content message.
Driving Traffic To Your Website
New webmasters often make the mistake of trying to drive as much traffic to their websites. The belief being that out of all those scores of people will exist some people that will be interested in what we have to offer. But the problem is it often costs money to drive traffic to your site so you want to make the best of it. What does this have to do with information overload? When you limit your traffic generation to only people that are looking for what you have to say, in other words your traffic is more targeted, then you are in essence reducing the amount of information overload for your readers and they will appreciate that much more than had you simply somehow got them to your website by whatever means necessary.
How To Stop Information Overload
Suppose you wanted to create an online business but you don’t know how to go about it. I would be willing to bet that you would spend a lot of time and money researching about how to create an online business. This would create an overwhelming (and expensive) situation for you. But if I had a way to show how to do it without going through all that research, that would seriously cut down on your information overload, don’t you think? Take a look at this course on how to create an online business. Go through the modules and you will have a road map that will greatly reduce the amount of information you would be exposed to had you not had those modules available.
