Will Doing What You Love Get Stale?
Everyone has something they are good at. If you aren't sure of what you are good at, what do you spend your free time on? I'm not talking about activities such as watching television. I'm talking about those activities that you continue to be drawn to.
Maybe you like to play guitar or write music. For others, it will be painting a landscape. You navigate towards activities that help clear your mind and gain perspective.
In short, you are doing what you love. But, what happens when you combine what you love with your livelihood? For many, this is a dream come true.
Confucius came up with the statement, "Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life."
However, after a while, is it possible doing what you love becomes commonplace to the point where you no longer love it?
People are fickle and become bored easily. While it may be exciting in the beginning when exploring your so called true calling. But, like anything else, you will do it day in and day out, probably for many years.
How to Keep It Fresh in Your Vocation
Before you throw in the towel and give up on your dreams of doing what you love, you can spice up what you do to keep it fresh. For instance, if you become expert in your vocation, consider teaching it to others. This gives you a new perspective for your vocation. It also strengthens your position as an authority.
Another way to keep it fresh is to look for alternative ways to use your skills. As an example, if you are a musician and playing out at bars is getting old for you, why not use your talents to create and sell music to others? You could create loops and sell them to royalty-free providers, etc.
It's Not Always About Money
Getting a paycheck is an important part of life. Most of us cannot sustain our lives without it. But, if you are in a rut, why not volunteer to teach others your craft or vocation? It's a great way of giving back and it can give you perspective in your field you would not have gotten.
You can extend this concept even further by seeking out a foundation or forming your own. This comes with its own set of challenges, but that is entirely the point. You can gain a renewed sense of purpose and you will have to work through theses challenges to obtain funding for your cause. This is an exciting proposition.
Find a New Hobby
If you make your hobby your work, consider creating a new hobby so that you are not constantly immersed in the original hobby. By starting a hobby that is completely unrelated, you will have renew your passion.
You never know what can happen as you meet new people in your new hobby. It could give you some new insight in your job or it can help you find opportunities in the new hobby.
