One Marketing Trick That’s Costing You Big

You're new to marketing and you come across an irresistible offer for a product. It has the potential for you to strike it big. It's an information product and the sales page is too good to pass up.

Marketing Trick (Mouse Trap)

You plunk $10 on the offer and use your email as part of the purchase. Before delivery of your product, the publisher asks you to verify your email address and you oblige.

You receive a confirmation follow-up email with further instructions that your product link will be included in another email.

In the meantime, you are encouraged to white list the seller's email so that you can receive future updates for your product. This is the trick you need to take notice. Oh, and the seller also tells you he will send you valuable information as part of being on his exclusive list!

What Happened to My Updates?

Marketers use this to keep you on the email list way longer than you need to be there. If you hold your breath waiting for updates to the product you bought, I'll bet money you'll pass out before getting. That's the point. They have no intention of sending you updates.

The purpose of the $10 product was
to get you on their email list!

The product you bought is likely to be a Private Label Rights (PLR) product that was changed up a bit (or not) just to get you to purchase and placed on the list. Click on the link above if you aren't familiar with the term (it opens in a new window!)

Marketers are using fear to keep you on their lists. You just purchased a product and they told you that subscribing to their email lists is the path to getting updates on those products. You reluctantly sign up because you don't want to miss out on updates to something you bought. Make sense?

It gets even worse. Most of the products these sellers are selling show techniques on how to become just like them. Do you want to bombard the people on your list with offer after offer? Sure, you may get some decent sales in the beginning. But, trust me! Your list will get tired of these tactics. You will lose these customers forever when that happens.

What about all the valuable information they were supposed to send?

You will receive plenty of emails from the marketers. The trouble is not much of it will be valuable. It will be email offers trying to get you to buy yet another product. This will go on for as long as you stay on the email list. What's worse, these jokers who call themselves marketers will start to become familiar to you to the point where you aren't unsubscribing from their list. You don't quite remember how you got on the list after a while, and that is exactly what they want. That is their sweet zone!

Digital Marketing

Are There Legitimate Product Sellers?

There are a few. You will recognize them immediately as the quality of the emails they send is high. The emails won't be overly sales-related and you will receive information for free, that you can put to use in your business.

With these legitimate product sellers, they will send occasional offers (hey, everyone's gotta make a buck, no?) but the frequency will be fewer than the free, quality emails you receive. Further, they will scrutinize the offers to make sure they fit with your goals and be worthwhile products that can help your business.

The Takeaway

To determine if a marketer will actually send you updates to the product you purchased, track the marketer's emails. Set up a spreadsheet with a sheet for every product you buy. Record the name of the marketer, the product name, and then record the date and type of email that you receive each time. You can use the terms Value and Sales Pitch as the types of emails you receive. You're welcome to come up with your own classifications.

Taking Action

You will receive plenty of emails from the marketers. The trouble is not much of it will be valuable. It will be email offers trying to get you to buy yet another product. This will go on for as long as you stay on the email list. What's worse, these jokers who call themselves marketers will start to become familiar to you to the point where you aren't unsubscribing from their list. You don't quite remember how you got on the list after a while, and that is exactly what they want. That is their sweet zone!

If you still feel afraid that you will miss a future update to your purchased product by unsubscribing to the list, evaluate the original product you bought. Did it help you succeed in bringing in money to your business? If it did, then feel free to stay on the list. If it didn't, find the link to unsubscribe and get off that list pronto!

I've just saved you months or even years of getting bombarded with sales pitches by product sellers. It will take a bit of work to determine the pitch-heavy ones from the ones offering value. However, think about the money you'll save by not spending on those pitches. You're welcome!

Hi Jim

Thank you for a very clear explanation of Private Label Rights. I had never heard this term before but have been “tricked” by this method before. It is good to have a name to put to it. I am off to have a clear out of my inbox and remove some of these ones no longer bringing value to my life.

Megan

Hey Megan, thanks for the comment. It is incredibly frustrating seeing ow they could add tremendous value by providing useful information or updates to their products. Instead, they choose to bombard people with sales offers. It’s a shame.

Best Regards,

Jim
